About Us

Cine Sparks provides young people with greater access to quality cinema and opportunities to develop their media and visual literacy. Since its inception in 2005, more than 16,000 people have enjoyed this festival of film. Cine Sparks transforms the cinema experience into something interactive and engaging, connecting young minds and educators through the power of the moving image.

The programme is designed to give young Australians, from ages 6 to 18, a window into the lives of people from other countries and cultures. However, the festival is not just about watching films.

Cine Sparks offers a range of MasterClass workshops for older students, held at Griffith University. The Cine Sparks Film Jury Competition challenges students throughout Queensland to review Kanyini (2006), an award-winning Australian documentary, which screened at Cine Sparks in 2006. Successful entrants will become members of a film jury, who will write about selected films featured in our programme and award jury prizes as part of the St.George Bank Brisbane International Film Festival.

Teachers are able to access educational materials designed to encourage literacy, critical reasoning, and creative expression, and to extend the cinema experience into the classroom.

In 2008, the Cine Sparks Team is again looking forward to presenting an exciting and engaging programme of films and moving-image education.
